Why are bespoke cakes so expensive?
There are multiple factors to the pricing of vegan cakes, the most obvious cost, is the ingredients. And by having to sub out core ingredients with vegan alternatives it bumps the cost up slightly, so you should expect to be paying around 10% more for ingredients.
But on top of that, the main cost of the cake is the bakers time. A simple plain three tier buttercream cake with some toppers could cost less than a single tier 6 inch cake, if that 6 inch cake had a bunch of custom fondant models (like the photo above) due to the time to make each component. And before we can even start decorating the cake, we need to get the creme coat and base layers on to even reach a blank canvas.
So before we can even get started decorating we are looking at at minimum 3 hours work, to bake the cake and get the creme coat complete. At minimum wage in the UK, that is around £36. Add on the time to add the custom work to make your cake bespoke, and of course the ingredient cost, it adds up quickly.
And don’t forget this is not take home page, we still need to pay insurance, utility bills, business insurance, website hosting, tax, national insurance and all the other little bits.
I am sure you can start to see why our prices cannot compete with mass produced cakes produced by robots for the big supermarkets like Tesco and Asda.
